The effects of 8-weeks Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program on cognitive control: an EEG study

2019

Objectives: Mindfulness practice can enhance different aspects of attentional functions, such as the ability to sustain the attentional focus over time. However, it is still unclear whether this practice might indeed impact higher cognitive functions, such as control mechanisms that allow the appropriate and flexible allocation of attentional resources. In this longitudinal study, changes associated with a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program were investigated, with a focus on proactive and reactive cognitive control mechanisms, namely, the ability to maintain task-relevant information and to prepare in advance the response, and the ability to promptly adjust overlearned behavi…

New considerations for modelling a MED-TVC plant under dynamic conditions

2019

Abstract The multiple-effect distillation (MED) technology is nowadays the most promising desalination process to be coupled with variable heat sources, thus leading to a more sustainable way to produce water. In order to prove the potential of this, it is of major interest to develop powerful modelling tools to predict the performance of this coupling. Only a few models have been presented so far. They show promising results but were based on some simplifying assumptions and non-physical constraints that could limit the analysis of the dynamic behaviour of a MED plant. This paper presents new considerations for the dynamic modelling of a MED plant associated with a thermal vapour compressi…

Maximum Torque per Ampere Control strategy for low-saliency ratio IPMSMs

2019

This paper deals with electrical drives employing low-saliency ratio interior permanent magnet synchronous motors. In particular, in order to help the designers choosing the best control algorithm, the performances of the Maximum Torque Per Ampere Control (MTPA) and the Field Orientation Control (FOC) are here both theoretically and experimentally assessed and compared, by using, as performance indicators, the torque-current ratio and the power losses. The tests are carried out on a low-power motor for various speeds and loads by implementing the two control strategies in a dSPACE® rapid prototyping system. The results show that the Maximum Torque Per Ampere algorithm has some appreciable a…

Smart strategy of an hybrid vehicle global energetic system gestion

2018

The main objective of this work is to develop an optimal management strategy to improve energetic efficiency of hybrid electric vehicle. This work is composed by a mobility experimental analysis part, a numerical modelization part and an optimization part of the energy management strategy. The study of mobility allow to highligth and quantify the predictibility of trips, due to a constraint mobility. The dynamic modelling of the vehicle which is necesary to study perfomance of strategies, was realized by Energetic Macroscopic Representation (EMR) which is a good methode in this case. The proposed strategy is based on the predictive control (MPC), solve by a method of Programming Quadratic, a…

Base-isolated structure equipped with tuned liquid column damper: An experimental study

2019

Abstract In this study, a novel passive vibration control strategy is investigated experimentally, where a Tuned Liquid Column Damper protects a base-isolated structure. The Tuned Liquid Column Damper is attached to the base, in contrast to typical attachment points of passive energy dissipation devices in high-rise buildings at elevated levels. Experiments on a base-excited small-scale three-story shear frame are conducted in order to study effects of both control devices – base-isolation and Tuned Liquid Column Damper – on the structural model. The dynamic properties of the stand-alone shear frame and the base-isolation subsystem are derived using standard dynamic test methods based on di…

Effective simulation model and new control strategy to improve energy efficiency in hybrid electric land vehicle

2014

The main objectives of this work is to develop an effective modeling method for an easydeployment of a control strategy, to review and study an optimal control strategy for a specific application, and to analyze improvement that can be effected to engine for better efficiency in hybrid vehicle architecture. The scopes of this work include the simulation part of the studied system and its validation with experimental results. Study cases are used to analyze optimization that can be effected to the original system. A well established optimization tool is chosen to optimize the actual control strategy and becomes a benchmark of a new optimal control strategy to be deployed in the system. A pre…

Aeration control in membrane bioreactor for sustainable environmental footprint

2020

In this study different scenarios were scrutinized to minimize the energy consumption of a membrane bioreactor system for wastewater treatment. Open-loop and closed-loop scenarios were investigated by two-step cascade control strategies based on dissolved oxygen, ammonia and nitrite concentrations. An integrated MBR model which includes also the greenhouse gas formation/emission processes was applied. A substantial energy consumption reduction was obtained for the closed-loop scenarios (32% for Scenario 1 and 82% for Scenario 2). The air flow control based on both ammonia and nitrite concentrations within the aerobic reactor (Scenario 2) provided excellent results in terms of reduction of o…

Exergoeconomic analysis as support in decision-making for the design and operation of multiple chiller systems in air conditioning applications

2020

Abstract Multiple-chillers systems represent viable solutions for medium/large-scale air conditioning applications characterized by variable cooling demand. The energy efficiency of such systems is influenced by the number of chillers, the combination of cooling capacities, and the load-sharing among the units. Large efforts have been devoted to developing efficient operation strategies for these systems, but rules of thumb are usually adopted for selecting cooling capacities thus leaving room for energy and economic savings. In this paper, exergoeconomic analysis is proposed as a promising method to identify near-optimal design and operation strategies, due to the capability of exergoecono…
